The sweltering temperatures are an indicator that summer is officially here, which means your energy bill will likely be rising. While there is no way to reduce the temperature outdoors, there are a few things you can do around the inside of your home to keep you and your family cool and your energy bills from skyrocketing. Take a look at these top tips to keep your house cool during the summer without constantly running the A/C.

Install Blackout Drapes

Installing blackout drapes is always a good idea because they keep the harsh summer sun from entering the home by reflecting the heat. Blackout curtains can get a little expensive, so you can always convert the drapes already covering your windows without breaking your budget. All you have to do is line them with a lightweight reflective fabric that will prevent the sun from filtering through.

Apply Window Film

Another way to prevent the sun from streaming in through the windows of your home is the installation of some energy-saving window film. These reflective window films are available in a variety of colors, patterns, sizes and intensities and they are super easy to apply in only a few short minutes. While most adhesive window films and tints are permanent or semi-permanent, there are some that are removable, making them ideal for renters.

Add Outdoor Awnings

Installing some awnings can also reduce solar heat from entering the home. However, if you choose to have awnings installed, keep in mind that you will want to put them on the south-facing and west-facing exteriors as these are the areas where the sun will be hitting.

Invest In Fans

Fans are great tools that can help keep the temps down inside of the home as the circulate and cool the air without using too much electricity. You could look at installing a few ceiling fans in the rooms you use the most and/or getting yourself some portable fans. During the evening and morning hours you may event want to consider placing a fan in an open bedroom window to keep cool while you sleep without having to run the A/C.

Plant Trees & Shrubbery

Planting trees, flowers, tall bushes and various other kinds of greenery around the circumference of your home can help keep energy bills down by protecting the siding and windows from the heat of the sun. Not to mention, if planted properly, new landscaping will add to the curb appeal of your pad. Climbing vines, such as English ivy, Boston ivy and Virginia Creeper, are excellent outdoor insulators that look elegant and are easy to maintain.
